The digital age has allowed dot com companies to grow user bases at rates that are beyond comprehension prior to the wide adoption of the Internet globally. Of course free-to-use is the principle strategy and sprinkle in the viral word-of-mouth for users and, BAM, users galore. However, the relationship forged by users that pay nothing for services is fragile at best. You may think that "hey, this phenominal value is provided free so they'll want to help us out". Of course, helping out is generating money to "feed the beast" of servers, code and data traffic. The problem is, in general, users don't care about a company's profitability. For users, especially free-to-use users, it's all about them. Chances are you aren't the only service on the web so piss them off and goodbye.
