Why Read This?  If you want to build an active audience that's interested in your thoughts, ideas and activities then invest in creating a "following" on LinkedIn.  It is easy to do, builds off of your base of connections, tracks metrics, guaranteed to be delivered and allows for interaction and relationship building.  Can Constant Contact Do That For You?  Nope!

Leveraging Connections

Most of you know that LinkedIn is a powerful online tool for creating an online Rolodex of contacts and being able to view into that "Rolodex's - Rolodex" (view into their contacts).  This can be very useful in finding out if anyone you're connected to knows someone in business you want to be introduced to.  This is called "connections" on LinkedIn.  Some people only want close business contacts and other people will take just about anyone.  If you're in the business of networking this tool has no other peer.  It's the best!
BUT, what if you want to build an audience not just your connections?  You don't need to turn to Facebook or Google Circles to create an audience for your thoughts, ideas, articles or advice.  Let's face it, it's a hassle having multiple social media accounts.
The good news is you can do all these things directly in LinkedIn and leverage your current connections as the foundation for building a new valuable relationship - LinkedIn "followers".

What's the difference?

Connections = 2 way relationship
LinkedIn connections are a two way street.  They allow you to view your connections' direct relationships and in turn they can view yours.  Any time you post on your timeline it shows up in their timelines.  They view what you publish, MAYBE.  That is if they happen to be looking at their timelines.
Followers = publishing channel
LinkedIn followers don't allow you to view their contacts BUT they get alerted to every LinkedIn Article you publish on LinkedIn.  They are interested in ALL OF your thoughts, ideas and information and value you enough to want to know when you share something new in a direct and very noticeable way.
Unlike timeline posts which only show up on other people's timelines, LinkedIn Articles show up in timelines and the LinkedIn PULSE (more about that later).

So How Do You Take Advantage of This?

First you need something to say and hopefully something that will connect with others.  You can use different tactics for accomplishing this.  There are plenty of tips just search it out.  The more general the topic, the higher the value of the content and the more controversial the topic - in general - the more views, likes, shares and comments you'll receive.

NEXT - Use the LinkedIn Article Writing Function.  You'll find access to it in your Profile.  You need to enter everything with their browser based WYSIWIG tool.  You can also cut and paste from Word or other programs to good effect.  Add in a nice picture - a good visual catches attention.   Search Google images and cut and paste it in.

CLICK the Publish button and BOOM you're article goes out to all your connections, all your followers and gets posted on LinkedIn's PULSE - articles.  Pulse is a collection of all articles and they use an algorithm to fit your published article into the appropriate Pulse group (i.e. retail, economy, media, etc.).  It gets picked for you.  Alternatively go to Pulse and pick a group to start.  This is an "open book" of exposure.
Your Goal is to get your article placed as a TRENDING ARTICLE in an interest area on Pulse.  You get there by having your article viewed and shared.  Once you get to the trending article section your Views, Shares and Comments will skyrocket --- I've had 100% increases every 10 minutes (i.e. 1,000 views goes to 2,000 in 10 minutes and continues).  PLUS you get Followers!  These folks are guaranteed to get any future articles you create.  They are active and interested in what you publish - unlike your connections that may not care what your write!  This is the equivalent of people asking to be on your email mailing list BUT you'll never end up in their spam filter.  It is VERY VALUABLE.  Example below Pulse Trending.

Now that you're actively building your followers you'll see that your total "follower count" will be your connections PLUS those who selected to be a follower.

Right, a Sample of a LinkedIn Article Post Report showing you activity and reach.  You get this delivered to your email.

Give it a try, it's free and easy to do.
